Welcome to Lightening the Darkness, a peer support group established by Jason and Shaun (two local guys), to provide individuals from Spennymoor and surrounding areas a safe, supportive environment as they progress on their mental health journey.
Following the ceasing of the very popular weekly support meetings of a local charity, Jason, Shaun and the group members quickly realised the group was a vital part of the local community and with no other organisation in the area, the idea to form a new group quickly turned into a necessity to ensure that vital support would still be available.
With the name chosen by members of the group, Lightening the Darkness (LIT for short!) was established and we are looking forward to welcoming members, new and old.
As a local charity, we started in January 2026 with a male-only peer-support session taking place on a Monday evening in Spennymoor, we have already replicated this with other sessions in the local community and are very proud that our ladies peer-support group commenced in June 2026.
Please follow our Facebook page where we will be sharing updates on our plans, group dates and times, fundraising and how you can get involved- whether you need support with your mental health or want to support our work.
Thank you
Our team, Our mission, Our values
The LiT team is committed to providing mental-health support and guidance to everyone who accesses our services. Our facilitators have first-hand, or lived experience of mental health struggles and using their knowledge, skills and resources deliver invaluable peer-support sessions. Each one carefully designed to address mental-health challenges, causes of poor mental-health and actionable insights to make realistic improvements to the lives of attendees for a positive, long-lasting impact on their mental well-being.
